Tying the Pieces Together

Although I didn’t get to do the depth of research I wanted on the topic I choose to do for my final project in Art History II, I believe that by doing the six quality blog posts I managed to get across the point that I was trying to make with the thesis of my project which was “To what extent did humanism have an impact across the major art movements in Italy and other European countries.” as I believe that Humanism as both an ideology and cultural movement had a major impact across the major art movements such as the Baroque, Early Renaissance, High Renaissance, Mannerism, and Romanticism through how the social and cultural ideals changed and thus affected the major artists as well as the nameless ones through how society and culture began to re appreciate the human form as at the forefront of the ideology and cultural movement that Humanism was it was the idea “that turned away from medieval scholasticism and revived interest in ancient Greek and Roman thought”.

When looking through the artwork that I choose to blog about, there are clear similarities between the pieces that I choose to do my research on as even though the pieces are from different major art movements there is always that sense of Humanism that connects the pieces even if they are from different eras. The case evidence that I can use to effectively prove my point is the fact that even if the paintings or frescoes are from different eras and different art movements there is always some connection to Humanism that is made in the piece of art itself. The pieces that I can use as evidence are two pieces that come from different art movements but yet the ideas and the culture movement of Humanism impacted the way in each of the pieces was composed, the pieces that I am going to use to help validate my point are the Allegory of Divine Providence by Pietro da Cortona and The Sleeping Venus by Giorgione as these pieces come from different art movements but one can clearly see the influence that Humanism had on the individual artists. As seen in Allegory of Divine Providence most of the figures are portrayed in idealized forms as at the root of the Humanism movement both socially and culturally there is the revitalization of interest in ancient Greek and Roman thought which meant that the ancient Greeks and Romans thought that beauty should be viewed in a highly idealized state and therefore the artists of the Renaissance and the other major art movements such as the Baroque which the Allegory of Divine Providence was painted during, sought to emulate how the ancient Greeks and Romans in every aspect of art to the point that it was not the natural form that they were painting but a highly idealized version of what they perceived to be the natural form. To connect this piece to the Sleeping Venus by Giorgione, one can clearly see the influence that Humanism had Giorgione as the subject of the painting is the epitome of beauty and is clearly what the female form should strive to be and both pieces are heavily influenced to follow what the ancient Greeks and Romans thought to be beautiful.

The art was not the only thing affected by the spread of Humanism but it was also the artists as well who were affected by the spread of the movement as even if the artists were painting in different eras and different art movements they all tied back to the original movement of Humanism. This is evidenced by the similarities in the work done by Giorgione and Pietro da Cortona as they were both part of different art movements yet both incorporated the style that was the entire focus of the movement as both used the  idealized form to their respective advantages which lead the paintings done in response to the Humanist movement to become world-famous and lead to later artists to try and emulate the masters such as Girogione and Pietro da Cortona in their own work with those artists actually being the successors to these masters.
